Trip Overview

6 days Thailand Water Festival New Year Celebration Holiday | Thailand packages 2024/5

Water festival new year Thailand

(This trip is only applicable from April)

Highlights:

  • Visit the many of Thailand’s Temples with lots of history. There are over 40,000 Buddhist temples in Thailand.
  • Make a stop at Bangkok’s floating market and sample local fruits and delicacies; from juicy rambutans to hearty jack-fruit.
  • Spend a day at Chiang Mai’s elevated Doi Inthanon National Park; stumble upon royal relics, explore a limestone cave, and enjoy sweeping views of the city below.
  • Thai food is known for its use of distinct flavors and spices – indulge in Pad Thai, Tom Yum soup, and wash it all down with a cold glass of Thai iced tea.
  • Songkran is Thailand’s most famous festival. An important event on the Buddhist calendar, this water festival marks the beginning of the traditional Thai New Year. The name Songkran comes from a Sanskrit word meaning ‘passing’ or ‘approaching’.
  • The annual Songkran Festival, previously held on dates that were dependent on the Thai lunar calendar, is now commemorated on the same 3 days every year. Songkran 2024 festival will take place April 13th through the 15th, a festival that is the country’s traditional New Year’s Eve celebration.

If you’re considering traveling to Thailand for Songkran (Thailand’s Water Fight Festival 2024) be prepared to get soaked having the time of your life in a fun and exciting water fight (all in good fun). The Thai New Year always takes place in the hottest time of the year, so it’s the perfect time for water play; you’ll feel like a kid again. Everyone will get it on the fun (at least those brave enough to gather in the streets), spraying, dropping water from above and splashing each other. While a lot of the water will come from the usual water guns, hoses and buckets, wetting down passerby, there are party goer’s who will drive around with 44 gallons of water, catching everyone by surprise; it’s all in good fun and a fun way to cool off.

Chiang Mai holds the biggest, most recognized Thailand Water Festival parade, which includes statues from local temples being carried out and paraded through the streets in celebration of this very special time of the year. Everyone is invited to take part in the parade by delicately and respectfully, pouring water over the legs and arms of the Buddha. One reason that Chiang Mai most likely commemorates Songkran more vigorously than other locations in Thailand is that a large number of people from Chiang Mai work in Bangkok and neighboring cities, so it gives them a chance to return home and celebrate with their families and friends.
