The 2026/7 Great Migration in Kenya is expected to follow its usual pattern, with the best viewing opportunities in the Maasai Mara National Reserve from July through October. Since the migration depends on rainfall and grazing conditions, exact arrival and river-crossing dates cannot be predicted, but the general seasonal pattern remains consistent.
2027 migration calendar (Kenya):
- Late June – July: The first herds begin arriving from the Serengeti National Park into the Maasai Mara.
- August – September: Peak migration season, with the highest chance of witnessing dramatic Mara River crossings by wildebeest and zebras. This is also the busiest safari period.
- October: Large herds remain in the Maasai Mara before gradually returning south as the rains begin.
Best time to visit
- For river crossings: August to September.
- For fewer crowds and excellent wildlife: Late July or early October.
- Recommended stay: At least 3–5 nights to maximize your chances of seeing a river crossing, as these events are unpredictable.
The Great Migration is one of the world’s largest wildlife movements, involving more than 1.5 million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, moving in a continuous cycle between Tanzania and Kenya in search of fresh grazing.
If you’re planning a safari, we recommend some of the best camps and conservancies in the Maasai Mara for river crossings, photography, luxury, or budget travel in 2027.
